Wonder why some songs dominate the charts across the world, while others do not actually take off?

It would be a bit subjective if we just say that famous songs are generally good songs, while the non-charting songs are bad songs. If that was the case, then there wouldn't be things like underrated or overrated songs.

To start, let us be enlightened that there are really no bad songs. Getting massive sales and airplays depend on people's preferences. One song might be appealing to some, but appalling to others. However, there are some songs that stand above the rest and become instant favorites, whatever the peoples' preferences may be.

What makes a record enter the list of famous songs?

The first element would have to be the marketability factor of a singer. Reaching the peak does not only depend on a good single. What kind of persona would make a lasting good impression to the audience? How will people digest a singer's presence in the music industry? What can he/she/they offer to the people? These questions should be the main concerns of a singer. This would be a bit easy for veterans who are planning for a comeback, but this is something he/she a newcomer should brave out.

The catchiness of the song should also be considered. Since radios only pick up songs that will surely catch the audience's attention (thus paving way for the so called radio-friendly songs,) they probably wouldn’t choose songs that are worthy of ignorance. Don't be puzzled why many of the songs played on the radio have repetitive choruses or bridges, 'coz that's one way they'll be included in the playlist. Some songs that have long near-dead-air sounds have radio edits just to fit in.

Lastly, the singer needs to do promotion. How will people know a song if it's not promoted in the first place? A song needs a buzz for it to get some audience. It's a way of telling everyone that a new material is about to come out, and it is up to the audience to embrace it or not.

It actually makes sense if we measure the goodness of a song based on its chart performance, but this does not necessarily apply to the other way around. Inability to chart should never be equated with a song's quality.
