The Origins of Hindi Music
Hindi music is believed to be amongst the most ancient musical traditions in the world. Over time a great many legends have circulated with regard to its origins and evolution. Music plays a very important role in Indian culture and Hindi music has its roots in Vedic times. It also displays a strong Persian influence present from around the 13th Century. Semi classical interpretations of Hindi music are known as thumri and tappa.
Most Indian music is 'sangeet' based, sangeet being an amalgam of three separate art forms - singing, music and dance.
Hindi Music Today
Over the years Hindi music has become more and more popular. Not only is it understandably well liked in India, but, as movies produced by the Bollywood film industry have begun to appeal to a wider global audience, so too has the music associated with it. This popularized form of Hindi music is known as Filmi music!
