As English is the most commonly spoken second language globally, it's no wonder that songs sung in the English language are the most popular worldwide. Sales figures of English and American popular music reinforce this statement.

It's interesting, however, to see just how many different types of 'English' are spoken, or sung, in songs. Country and Western music for example often features the syntax of America's deep south. While Punk music originally had a very definite UK flavor, in keeping with it's 1970s birthplace of Britain. In stark contrast today's Rap music uses what might seem to some to be an entirely new dialect. All, however, are sung in English. And of course the Beatles where largely responsible for songs being sung in an English accent - previously even UK performers sang in American accents.

Despite there being various types of English music, it being a cross genre art form, it is still one of the single most powerful means by which people understand one another and relate on an emotional level.
