Samba-reggae is a form of free Brazilian Music (samba) fused with some Jamaican styled melodies (reggae) and can be characterized by a musical speed of about 90 to 120 beats for every sixty seconds. There are usually 3 or 4 bass drum pieces, natively known as surdo, in a Samba-reggae composition and a rhythm of 2/4 is kept in the play of the latter. Until today, Samba-reggae is still a constant reminder for African-Brazilians of their honor, history and indigenous traditions.

The genre first became popular during the 1970s in a city called Salvador in Bahia. It represented the Black Pride movement back then when the black people of Brazil cultivated the latter to be able to perform it as a piece that is truly and distinctly their own. Thus, building up and solidifying the camaraderie amongst members of their kinship with the help of music.
